Can I have a policy with you if I have convictions?

There are a number of factors that influence getting a policy with us. We may provide a quote for drivers with motoring convictions, but not unspent non-motoring convictions.

Please contact us on Live Chat if any driver on your policy receives a conviction so that we can update your details and advise if this affects your policy.

How do I get my black box fitted?

Our specialist team at RS Connect will contact you within 5 working days of your policy start date to arrange for the black box to be fitted to your car. They will visit your home or place of work or study between Monday and Friday at a day and time suitable to you – some Saturday appointments might be available.

You are insured from the moment you buy your policy but please note that if we’re not able to fit the black box within 14 days of your policy start date, we reserve the right to cancel your policy. We will give you 7 days’ notice in writing as described in your Private Car Policy Document.

What information can the black box tell you?

The black box monitors a number of driving related factors, such as mileage, speed, the time of day and the location of your car. It records any sudden impacts on the car, monitoring heavy braking or harsh acceleration. We’ll post a summary of your driving data in Your Portal, where you’ll also be able to see Reward Points awarded to you for safe driving behaviour.

Please note that we’re aware that occasionally you have no alternative but to use your brakes severely to avoid an accident; occasional use of “hard” braking will not be scored against you. We look at a number of factors to give an overall assessment of driving.

How do I buy Top Up Miles?

You can buy Top Up Miles in Your Portal. The price of your Top Up Miles depends on your premium – this is called your cost per mile rate and it was set when you took out your policy, changed your details, or when you renewed.

You can buy Top Up Miles online in bundles of 250, 500, 1,000 or 2,000 miles at any time during your policy. Alternatively, you can buy a set amount of miles by calling us on 0330 022 1000.

Unused Policy Miles cannot be refunded but any remaining Top Up Miles will roll over to the following year when you renew.

Am I covered to drive other cars?

No – our policies don’t cover you to drive other cars, other than a courtesy car provided to you under the approved repairer scheme, if your car is damaged following an insured loss. Full details of your cover can be found in your Car Insurance Schedule in Your Portal.

Can other people drive my car?

Only if:

  • They are a named driver on your policy, or
  • Their own insurance policy includes cover for driving other cars.

If someone, who is not a named driver on your policy has an accident while driving your car, they will need to claim on their own insurance policy.

Do you inform the police or other authorities about speeding instances?

While we encourage safe driving and advise you to drive at a speed that is appropriate for the road and driving conditions, we won’t inform the police if you drive over the speed limit. We won’t release your driving information to any authorities unless we have your permission or we are required to do so by law, or we suspect fraud or attempted fraud.

Will I get a discount if I have a Pass Plus?

Yes, we give a discount for Pass Plus. When you get your quote online, select Pass Plus on the ‘Do you have any additional driving qualifications?’, or inform the Customer Service advisor if you’re calling in. Please note: you will need to provide us with a copy of your Pass Plus Certificate.

What is Uninsured Loss Protection?

Uninsured Loss Protection (provided by ARAG Plc) – Available on policies with a start date up to & including 30th November 2021.

This means we will cover legal expenses up to £100,000 to reclaim losses, not covered by your policy, from someone who has caused an accident resulting in your injury or damage to your car. The third party must be identifiable for us to reclaim.

If you choose to make a legal costs claim, our provider will appoint a solicitor, or one of their agents, to handle your case and seek compensation and claim back losses like your excess for you. Please note that this applies if there is a reasonable chance of the case being successful.

What is Courtesy Car Cover Plus?

Courtesy Car Cover Plus, administered by Brit Syndicates Ltd, provides a courtesy car for up to 21 days if your car is declared a total loss following an accident that was your fault, or as a result of fire, lightning, flood, vandalism, explosion, theft or attempted theft. For all other instances, a courtesy car is provided under the terms of your policy when a claim is made.

To receive the courtesy car hire you must meet the following criteria: you must be able to produce a current full valid driving licence which has been continuously in force for six months, and you must not work as an entertainer or professional sportsperson.

If you don’t qualify for a courtesy car because you don’t meet the above criteria, or a courtesy car is not available, you will receive up to £250 towards reasonable and necessary alternative transport costs where you’re able to provide official receipts.

Courtesy Car Cover Plus also includes:

  • Cover for legal costs and expenses up to £50,000 if you are prosecuted for a motoring offence
  • Cover for legal costs and expenses up to £50,000 if you are a victim of vehicle number-plate cloning
  • Identity theft advice and assistance
  • Access to legal, tax and counselling helplines
  • Access to a consumer legal services website

You can add Courtesy Car Cover Plus at the start of your policy or at renewal. Unfortunately, you are unable to add it mid-way through the term of your policy.
