Can other people drive my car?

Only if:

  • He/she is a named driver on your policy, or
  • His/her own insurance policy includes driving other cars (DOC) cover.

If someone who is not a named driver on your policy has an accident while driving your car, he/she will need to claim on his/her own insurance policy.

It is imperative that you check any driver is insured to drive your car before you let them use your car.

What is Compulsory Insurance Enforcement?

If a vehicle shows as uninsured on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) the registered keeper will be sent an Insurance Advisory Letter (IAL), explaining that it’s a legal requirement for all vehicles to have insurance, unless it has been declared ‘off road’ by a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). For more information visit http://www.direct.gov.uk/motoring.

If I’m not going to drive my car temporarily what can I do about my insurance?

Your premium already takes into account the miles you use and the fact that your vehicle may not always be in use. However if you are not going to need your vehicle to be covered for a prolonged period of time because you are not planning to drive your car, you can make a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to the Driver & Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA).

Once the vehicle is legally declared off road you will not require insurance cover on the vehicle and you can contact us to arrange the suspension of your policy. However, please be aware that you will be required to continue payments for the full term.

During the suspension period the policy will not be valid, however at the end of the policy year you will still be entitled to your No Claim Discount (NCD) as long as you have not made a claim.

You can re-activate your policy at any time and you will still benefit from your full remaining miles.  If you would like to suspend your policy, please call Customer Service on 0330 022 0200.

What do I need to do if I change my car?

Please call Customer Service on 0330 022 0200 and we will update your details. You must tell us straight away about any changes that may affect your policy.

These include changes to your car, where you live, or your list of named drivers. If you don’t tell us this new information you may not be covered if you need to make a claim. Please note: any change in circumstances may result in an increase or decrease in premium.
